Phase 5

The original seats made a very good and comfortable work seat as I got stuck into the install. First by putting all the locating bolts in the upper control arms and then fitting new cam bolts to the lower arms and installing them back on the car. Leaving all the bolts a little lose so we could make final adjustments before torquing the bolts down.

The coil over set up looked really good and was easy to install. Here is the front set up where we also installed new dust boots, and new lower ball joints.

Given the age of the car and the state that the wheel bearings were in, we had ordered new bearings and hubs, all round. A worthwhile precaution while we were rebuilding the suspension.

It was amazing to see the relative sophistication of the Miata suspension during this stage of the build. A total of 8 cam bolts – all on the lower control arms- are capable of adjustment – effecting camber and castor. Add in the toe in adjustment on the tie-rods and the adjustable end links we would be using there would be a lot of adjustment variables to take care of during track set up.

The rear spindles or uprights were so badly seized we ordered new ones which came with both inner and out bearings already fitted – again a relative easy install. These would be fitted before the new rotors and re-manufactured brake calipers, which we painted before fitting

Next step was to install the new hubs, rotors and brakes. New hubs all round with new bearings, Rotors care of Brembo, Hawk Blue Racing pads, re-manufactured calipers and a set of steel braded brake lines – this baby should stop!

Well now for a well deserved break – and the fun part. Tomorrow we are driving

down to Summit Point where I take the Skip Barber Race Program – hopefully

to fulfill the remaining requirements to get my SCCA Race License.

Late in the afternoon however I get a call at school from my mum who tells me t

here is a huge 18 wheeler at the bottom of our driveway. At long last the motor

has arrived back from BSI Racing in Florida. When I get home however the initial excitement wears off quickly when I realize that somehow I have to get it up the driveway – dad is at work and I have to come up with a plan very quickly.

Easy – pallet truck to back of Durango , Durango up the drive to garage – engine hoist lifts motor out of Durango – shower and I ‘m back at school in 45 minutes.  Impressive.

So – back to Summit Point – absolutely great program – and you can read all about it in update number 18. Looking good in the number 46 car – awesome experience and now cant wait to get the Miata on the track.

The next week-end we get some help from our friends and now have a new power source for the car
