Phase Two

Day two – and we are back at it again. The cockpit looks a little different now!!

My dad urges caution with the removal of the steering wheel (it has an airbag) so I figure disconnecting the battery would be a good start. Would be sort of cool

to see the bag inflate when we release the wheel but close inspection proves

It can be done safely and we do get it off – although we did have to use a

hub puller that my grandfather had bought my dad for his first car.

One of the hardest tasks was to get the dash panel stripped out – the radio

was pretty easy but the heater controls and dash area were particularly tough

– unfortunately we resorted to the big snips to cut the control wires and then

 remove the panel

We decided to keep the park brake – even though it was added weight one never knows when you might need it – could come in handy if I decide to run

the car in solo autocross one day.

For safety reasons we are going top fit a full roll cage

that includes door braces so the next job was to remove t

he driver’s window – including all door hardware (electric motor etc)

and speakers and wiring.

My dad had to get the drivers side window mechanism out – and wow what a job – neither of us realized that there was a strengthening bar holding it in to the door.

Next job was to get under the hood – I could not wait. In fact we took the hood completely off so it would be easier to get to all the mechanicals. A lot of the ancillaries were nice and easy to get to and therefore remove –

air box, fuel rails, intake & throttle body etc. Others were a little

more challenging – such as the starter motor – wow - would not

like to change that thing on a wet day on the side of the highway.

Cooling fans and radiator were again a synch – they would be

replaced with a bigger racing application. Power steering rack

and air conditioning unit I left to dad – he said he likes the smell

of oil! What a dirty job – the whole of the front of the car was

covered in power steering fluid – and it stank.

Short break for some very serious paintball in Pittsburgh – and back hard at it.
